What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery that permanently removes fat cells from your body. It can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with a breast reduction, tummy tuck, or facelift. Liposuction is a great way to alter the contouring in your:
- Abdomen
- Hips
- Buttocks
- Thighs
- Upper arms
- Face
- Flanks
While liposuction does remove a significant volume of fat in the targeted area, it can’t eliminate cellulite. Having realistic expectations is an important part of any cosmetic surgery, and during your consultation with David M. Godat, MD, he takes the time to explain the results you can expect.
What is the liposuction process like?
Liposuction can be performed using sedation or general anesthesia so you’ll be able to rest comfortably throughout the procedure. Dr. Godat prefers tumescent liposuction, a technique that involves injecting a sterile saline solution with pain medication into the treatment area.
That solution makes it easier to suction out fat cells. The device used to remove those cells is a thin cannula, and the incisions are less than a ¼ inch in length. Dr. Godat takes care to place your incisions in areas where they will not be noticeable after healing.
Once he’s pleased with the results, Dr. Godat closes and bandages the incisions, and you’ll move to a recovery area while your anesthesia wears off. You’ll likely be able to return home the same day.
What is the recovery process like after liposuction?
You’ll receive pain medication to use the first few days after your procedure. From that point forward, you can use over-the-counter pain medication as needed to address soreness. Dr. Godat provides a special compression garment to wear in the weeks following your procedure.
It’s normal to have some lingering soreness in the treatment area for a few weeks afterward. You may be able to return to work within a few days, but it may take weeks before you can resume higher activity levels.
Dr. Godat removes your sutures during your one-week postoperative visit. You’ll need to follow Dr. Godat’s instructions in regard to activity level and immersion in water. Your healing process depends in large part on your overall health. If you’re a smoker, make every effort to quit prior to your procedure, as smoking impedes the healing process.

Went in expecting a possible run around because I didn’t know if I lost enough weight but the staff was completely welcoming and human and helped me to see things I couldn’t see on my own and I could get help for skin removal. Dr Godat walked in and cemented that feeling. He listened to my history and weight loss stats and told me I did just enough and I was a great candidate for surgery. Before going to Dr. Godat I had two previous breast surgeries, a lift and implant replacement. Both of them after so many years started to “sag” again. They were heavy and my bra straps began to dig into my shoulders. I learned about the internal bra surgery and made my appt with Dr. Godat. He and his nurses explained the whole procedure and this was exactly what I was looking for! Fast forward to today, almost 9 months after the procedure I wish I would had known about this the first time and didn’t waste the time, money or pain on the previous two procedures. I recommend ANYONE wanting a breast Augmentation to go to him and couple it with the “internal bra surgery” my implants stay up, stay in place, and the only reason I wear a bra is for “decoration!” Dr. Godat and his staff are amazing, they explain and answered all my questions even if I asked them twice! Everything about this procedure was awesome. Now I’m not going to lie, recovery takes a bit more time and care… but for me it was 100% worth it!

David Godat did a breast reduction, and made them look a lot similar then before. Very easy process.
I had a Duodenal Switch in October of 2017 and since that time had gone from 389# to 235# which left me with and abundance of hanging skin. The weight lost actually increased my back pain due from my herniated disks due to the lack of “padding” as well as the added stress from the hanging skin. Once I was finally approved for the skin removal and abdominoplasty last December, The process was very quick. I had my first appointment on Dec 3rd, preop on Dec 9th and surgery on Dec 12th. Everything went great. I had and issue with one area of abdomen not healing properly ending up in the need for wound care for it to totally heal. The results have been AWESOME. I am now having very little back pain have lost another 20# (down to 215#) and 6 more inches from my waistline (44 inch waist before skin removal and now 38). Dr. Godat and his staff have been truly amazing thru this whole process.

Silicone implants have come a long way. Today, they are made of “form-stable” silicone that keeps its shape in your body. This eliminates rippling and uneven contours that are typically seen in saline implants. In addition, the feel of silicone implants is much softer and more natural than saline.
